Akershus Fortress was begun by Haakon V around 1299, after Oslo was plundered by Duke Eirik. It was meant to be an impregnable stronghold — and it withstood every attack throughout the Middle Ages.
During the Second World War, the fortress served as the Nazis' administrative headquarters in Norway. Norwegian resistance fighters were executed here. Quisling was imprisoned and shot in the fortress moat in 1945.
