King Frederick III ordered the construction of an entirely new town after the old Fredrikstad was burned and plundered by Swedish forces. The town plan was drawn up by a Dutch engineer. The ramparts are so thick that no cannonball of the era could break through them. And yet — the fortress was never attacked from the sea.»

Fredrikstad fortress town was founded in 1663 after the old town was burned by Swedish forces during Charles X Gustav's assault. Frederick III ordered a new town built within ramparts, and Dutch engineer Johan Caspar de Cicignon drew up the town plan that remains intact to this day.
The fortress was never taken in war. The ramparts are up to six meters thick and surrounded by a wide moat. Barracks, powder magazines, a church, and a prison all stood within the walls — a complete town behind the defenses.
