«Beneath your feet, inside the mountain, runs a tunnel. It was blasted out by the Armed Forces during the Cold War to protect a NATO radar base from nuclear attack. The tunnel is 1,800 meters long and went into operation in 1959. Until recently, its very existence was classified. You're standing on top of a mountain that kept secrets for 60 years.»

Gaustatoppen rises 1,883 meters and is the most prominent peak in Norway — from the summit, you can see a sixth of Norway's land area on a clear day. That has made it strategically important.
During the Cold War, a secret military facility was blasted into the mountain — complete with a funicular, a radar system, and survival supplies for nuclear war. The facility was operational from 1959.
Today, civilians can ride the Gaustatoppen cable railway — the world's shortest funicular — up through the mountain. EchoTrail is triggered from Stavsro and along the ridge toward the summit.
