Fredrikstad was founded in 1567 by Frederick II, and from the 1660s the town east of the Glomma river was rebuilt as a fortress town along Dutch lines. This is the district we call Gamlebyen today — with ramparts, moats, powder towers, and straight cobblestone streets that still lie exactly where they were laid.
What makes Gamlebyen special is that it was never abandoned. Inside the ramparts today you'll find a bakery, galleries, cafés, and people living in the old houses. History here isn't displayed behind glass — it's in use.
