Østfold

The archipelago does not end at the rock. It continues underwater — and behind every boathouse.

Audio guide to Hvaler and Ytre Hvaler National Park

Granite, skerries, and a national-park sea.

Ytre Hvaler became a national park in 2009. People have lived and fished here for thousands of years.

What you'd hear right here
«The slab under your shoes is Iddefjord granite — the same stone that was quarried for cobbles in Gamlebyen. In front of you lies Ytre Hvaler National Park: Norway’s first marine national park, established in 2009. Below the surface: kelp forest, corals, wrecks. Above it: lighthouses, boathouses, and islands that have housed fishers since the Iron Age.»

This is a taste of what EchoTrail would tell you here. Authentic. Based on your exact GPS position.

The island realm facing Skagerrak

Hvaler is a municipality of islands in southern Østfold, toward the Swedish border and the Skagerrak. Kirkøy, Spjærøy, Asmaløy and Vesterøy are linked by bridges; farther out lie Akerøya with fortress ruins and Homlungen lighthouse. The coast is granite slab, not sand beach.

Ytre Hvaler National Park was established on 26 June 2009 as Norway’s first marine national park. About 340 of 354 square kilometres are sea. The purpose is to protect a shallow coastal ecosystem — kelp forest, soft bottom, corals — and cultural heritage such as wrecks and fishing stations.

EchoTrail triggers along coastal paths, at lighthouses and boathouses, and in Explorer mode in the archipelago. You hear geology, coastal fishing, and legends that belong to these islands — where you stand, not as a pre-recorded loop.
