Oslo

The metro ends. The forest begins. The story has been here the whole time.

Audio guide to Oslomarka — hear the forest as you walk

The city’s backyard is a forest realm.

Nordmarka, Lillomarka, Østmarka — marked trails a stone’s throw from downtown.

What you'd hear right here
«You are twenty minutes from parliament, and still in a forest that has been Oslo’s reservoir, timber source and Sunday walk for more than a hundred years. The trail you are on is marked by DNT and the City of Oslo. The cabin you see is one of hundreds in Marka. Under winter snow lie the same roots that carry blueberries in summer.»

This is a taste of what EchoTrail would tell you here. Authentic. Based on your exact GPS position.

Marka as the city’s second room

Oslomarka is the forest and recreation belt around Oslo — Nordmarka to the northwest, Lillomarka, Østmarka and Krokskogen. The Marka Act of 2009 protects the area from development. People in Oslo have walked, skied and gathered firewood here for generations; today there are marked trails, lit ski tracks, and metro stops at several trailheads.

The lakes in Nordmarka have supplied the city with drinking water. Cabins and lodges — many run by clubs — are part of the culture. This is not Trolltunga. It is the everyday walk: after work, Sunday with children, skis when there is snow.

EchoTrail triggers along marked trails and at lakes and knolls. In Discovery mode you get short tales of forestry, waterworks and local legend. Silence mode fits when you want the forest to speak least.
